Can You Recommend Your Religion?

Romans 1:16,17

Introduction: Many people have asked me to write a letter of recommendation for them. Most of the time, I can do this with no reservations about it at all. There are times that I have been asked to recommend a car or some product to someone. Perhaps you have had some of these experiences also.

A. Many times, perhaps unknown to us, we are asked to recommend our religious beliefs to others.

B. Let us investigate our faith and religious beliefs and see if they are worthy of upholding. Also, let us see if we are upholding our faith in a worthy way.

I. Can You Recommend Your Religion By The Word of God?

A. Give a Bible answer to a Bible question (I Thes. 5:21; I Peter 3:15; 4:11).

B. Can you open your Bible and find the church of which you are a member mentioned in it?

1. Can you find the doctrine you embrace?

2. Can you find the name you wear?

3. Can you prove you are an obedient disciple?

C. Are you a member of the church that Christ built or one built by some man or men?

1. Christ is the builder of His church—Matt. 16:18.

2. Christ is the head of His church—Col. 1:18.

3. God adds those who are saved to the body of Christ—Col. 1:18.

4. It is through the church that we can give glory to God by Christ—Eph. 3:21.

D. What about the doctrine you are following (II John 9)?

1. Does it have its basis from the scriptures (II Tim. 3:16,17).

2. Are we aware of the warning against false teachers in Gal. 1:6-9.

E. Are you a Disciple (learner) of the Lord? (John 8:31,32).

1. No one can be a disciple unless they abide (continue) in the Word.

II. Can You Recommend Your Religion By The Way You Live?

A. Our life is a true evaluation of how and what we believe (Titus 1:15,16).

1. Matthew 7:15-21.

2. James 2:14,18.

B. If a person’s religion does not change him—he needs to change his religion.

1. Let your manner of life be worthy of the Gospel of Christ (Phil. 1:21).

2. We are to be a proper example for those living in the world (Matt. 5:16).

3. We are not just to be someone who tells a person how to become a Christian, we are to show them how to live as a Christian.

III. Can You Recommend Your Religion By The Way You Support It?

A. Do we support the church by our attendance and participation in the various programs of teaching and other good works?

1. Our attendance and style of life proclaims a message to our neighbors, friends, and fellow-Christians.

B. Do we support the works of the church financially? Do we recommend this church by the way we give?

1. Can we separate our devotion and our giving?

IV. Can You Recommend Your Religion By The Way It Works For You?

A. Does your religion provide you with something to turn to and lean upon? (Phil. 4:11,13; Romans 8:28).

1. Not one spiritual blessing is found outside of Christ.

2. Not one good thing will be withheld from them that walk uprightly (Ps. 84:11).

V. Are You A Christian?

A. Do you call yourself one?

B. A New Testament Christian is one who:

1. Has faith in God (Heb. 11:1-6) and believes that Jesus is the Son of God (John 8:24).

2. Is willing to repent and live for the Lord (Luke 13:1-5).

3. Confesses Christ as the Son of God before men (Matt. 10:32,33).

4. Is baptized for the remission of sins (Acts. 2:38; Gal. 3:26-29).

5. Is willing to live a faithful life for the Lord (I John 1:7; Rev. 14:13).
