Speaking The Truth In Love

(Ephesians 4:11-16)

Introduction: There has been much emphasis placed on the absolute need to preach the truth as revealed in the scriptures. Some have preached the truth in a harsh, cold way. On the other hand, some have emphasized the love of God in such a way that the obedience of the truth has been neglected. We must present the truth in a loving manner whereby the erring will be motivated to become obedient to the Lord.

I. We must speak The Gospel Message (Romans 1:16).

A. Jesus commissioned the Apostles to preach the Gospel (Matt. 28:19,10; Mark 16:15,16).

B. Results of their speaking the gospel message are:

1. Establishment of the church (Acts 2).

2. Growth of the church. Redeemed added to them (Acts 2:47; 4:4; 5:14), numbers multiplied (Acts 6:1,7). Gentiles added (Acts 10: 34-48).

3. Persecution of the church (Acts 5:12-20; 40-42; 8:1-4; 9:1,2; 12:1-5; 14:19; 28:17-22).

C. Steadfastness in speaking the message (Acts 4:18-20; 5:27-42; 9:20-25; 14:1,2; 18:27,28).

D. Paul’s admonition to Timothy (II Tim. 2:2, 15; 4:1-8).

E. Peter’s admonition to all Christians (I Peter 3:15; 4:11).

II. The Message Must Be The Truth.

A. Truth came through Jesus Christ (John 14:6).

B. Truth was the power of the apostles’ message (John 14:26; 16:12-15; Acts 4:13; I Tim. 2:5-7).

C. Truth is attainable and knowable (John 8:31,32; 17:17; II Tim. 1:12).

1. Only truth saves us (Rom. 1:16).

2. We must not hinder the truth in unrighteousness (Rom. 1:18).

D. There is no substitute for truth.

1. The apostle Paul is an example (Acts 23:1; I Tim. 1:13).

E. Therefore, we must speak the truth regarding:

1. The establishment and propagation of the church.

2. The plan of salvation.

3. The leadership of the church.

4. The duties of members of the church.

5. The worship of the church (John 4:24).

6. The discipline of the church.

7. Marriage, divorce and remarriage.

8. Responsibilities in marriage.

9. The Christian life (Ethics, character, etc.).

10. The second coming of Christ.

F. Warnings against departing from the truth (Gal. 1:6-9; II Peter 3:14-18).

III. Truth Must Be Spoken In Love.

A. Since truth is necessary for salvation, love will not alter or compromise the gospel message (Gal. 4:16). "Am I become your enemy because I tell you the truth?"

B. The message of truth must be spoken in love to:

1. Our Family.

2. Our Neighbors.

3. Our brethren.

C. Our loving concern will lead others hopefully to obey the truth.

Conclusion: The purpose of speaking the truth in love is to obey God, to save ourselves and those who hear us. "Take heed to yourself and to your teaching. Continue in these things; for in doing this, you will save both yourself and those that hear you." (I Tim. 4:16)
