Remember a time you have stumbled, yet managed to break your actual fall? How did you feel? Clumsy and uncoordinated, yet grateful to have not sustained a broken bone, skinned knee, or shattered ego. You will simultaneously let go of anything you are holding and grab at whatever you can to break your fall, as your whole body is working to get your balance and protect itself. Stumbling is bad enough, especially in the few seconds you feel yourself going down, yet as soon as you catch yourself you are grateful to be okay.
We all will stumble each day in some figurative sense of the word. Perhaps we become angry and lash out, or maybe we just have fear and worry to the point of being paralyzed. Maybe we gossip or curse or take pleasure in putting someone in their place. There are hundreds of ways we stumble each and every day, yet we have a constant Hope of not falling. We can let go of everything and cling to the Hand reaching for ours. You may not see it, but it is constantly there waiting to catch you and break your fall.
Psalms 37:23-24 assures us, “If the Lord delights in a man’s way, he makes his steps firm; though he stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.” Even when we stumble to the point of falling, God is there to catch us. We may be blinded to His presence, but that does not stop the fact that He remains faithful…always ready to break you fall.
