Day 14 – A New Person
Today’s thought is shared by Vince Palazola (Vince is the father of Angie, who is a former Great Oaks’ member now living in Arkansas)…
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
If you met John (the bull) Bramlett in the 50’s you actually came face-to-face with the devil. John probably broke all of the 10 Commandments except thy shall not kill but it wasn’t because he didn’t try it on the football field. When we played Humes in 1958 our coach told us that John wasn’t out there to play football and that he was only out to hurt someone. Coast put his picture over my locker and wrote “Palazola, I’m going to kill you” because I played right guard in front of him. What coach didn’t know is I grew up with John so he didn’t try any of that dirty stuff with me because we were friends. John played baseball after he graduated from Memphis State which is now call Memphis University. His fighting, drinking, drugs, and dirty tricks got him kicked out of baseball after two years. John went from 180 lbs. to 223 lbs. so he could play professional football. He was runner up to Joe Namath as rookie of the year. He landed in jails all over the country and was known as the meanest man in football in ’89.
When John reached this point in life he had everything – money, prestige, women even though he was married at the time but he realized something was missing. One night he had a visitor come by his home and shared how Jesus loved him and wanted to give him a brand new life. John obeyed the gospel and repented of his sins and tried to walk the Christian walk. Now before he died he would see me and always asked “Do you know Jesus and give me a big hug?”
Do you know Jesus? No matter how bad you’ve been, Jesus will forgive you and make you His.
