RACHEL
We often hear about the faith of Jacob, but little of his favorite wife, Rachel, for whom he worked 14 years. Rachel had a hard time. First, she had to wait 14 years to finally get married. She had to watch her sister get the husband she expected after 7 of those years. Then, she was barren for many years. She finally had two boys for Jacob: Joseph and Benjamin, his favorite sons. She died in childbirth having Benjamin, and then Jacob didn’t even name him what she said. I think we can safely say Rachel was at least long suffering. Can we say she was faithful? In Genesis 30:6, Rachel says, “God has judged me, and has also heard my voice and given me a son.” This wasn’t her own son but one from her handmaiden. After a lengthy chapter depicting all of Jacob’s other children being born, we read, “Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb.” The fact that it says God listened to her indicates that she was seeking Him, praying to Him. Rachel was not without fault (as none of us are). She stole her father’s idols and lied about it. She was jealous and bitter. But perhaps in Rachel’s long suffering we can see God’s faithfulness. He heard her cries all the time and finally answered her prayers. This should give us encouragement that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Rom. 5:8) This also urges us to look more deeply at those who are bitter or who complain. They may be going through a hard time, like Rachel undoubtedly did. Lastly, we should remember that His power is made perfect in our weakness. (2 Cor. 12:9) How wonderful it is to have a God who goes in our place when we are weak! I am thankful for Rachel’s story to remind me of God’s faithfulness.
Dear Heavenly Father, Please help us to remember that you are faithful to us. Thank you for this account of Rachel, and help us to see that as you remembered her, you will also remember us. In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen

A menudo oímos hablar de la fe de Jacob, pero poco de su esposa favorita, Raquel, para quien trabajó 14 años. Raquel lo pasó mal. Primero tuvo que esperar 14 años para finalmente casarse. Finalmente tuvo dos hijos para Jacob: José y Benjamín, sus hijos favoritos. Ella murió al dar a luz teniendo a Benjamín, y luego Jacob ni siquiera le puso el nombre que ella dijo. Escuchó sus gritos todo el tiempo y finalmente respondió a sus oraciones. Esto debería animarnos a saber que, cuando aún éramos pecadores, Cristo murió por nosotros. (Rom. 5:8) Esto también nos insta a mirar más profundamente a los que están amargados o que se quejan. Puede que estén pasando por un momento difícil, como sin duda le pasó a Rachel. Por último, debemos recordar que Su poder se perfecciona en nuestra debilidad. (2 Cor. 12:9) ¡Qué maravilloso es tener un Dios que va en nuestro lugar cuando somos débiles! Estoy agradecido por la historia de Raquel porque me recuerda la fidelidad de Dios.
