THE IMPORTANCE OF CONTINUITY
Nehemiah felt inspired to register the people by genealogies. Though the reading of chapter 7 may seem tedious today, the list of names was an important source of “comfort” in that day. (Neh. 10: 1-39) The list elaborated on Ezra’s original list and demonstrated continuity with the past. (Ezra 2) Last August, Great Oaks celebrated its 30th year anniversary and I was privileged and blessed to learn its remarkable history. As military folks, we moved around quite a bit and had not been a part of any congregation for long. So, as I wandered the halls, viewed the various group exhibitions, the memorials, and the timeline of milestones; surprisingly, after seeing all this, I was filled with a joyous sense of belonging to something even larger than Great Oaks. Nehemiah wrote of “living” people designated by name. The listing gave not only numbers but “identity.” They had genealogical roots that connected them with all the people of God since the day of the exodus. (Ezra 2) Continuity is important because it serves as a reminder to us and those who will follow to set our faith and hope in God and not forget His promises. (Psalm 78: 3, 6-7)
When things seem hopeless and lost, these biblical records and our own remembrance celebrations prove that God’s blessings extend across the centuries.
Our Father and our God, as the Ancient of Days, You do not change. Thank you, for your inspired Word that is a record of those who placed their faith in You and Your promises. They serve as reminders that we too can by faith, persevere and overcome. In Jesus’ name, Amen

LA IMPORTANCIA DE LA CONTINUIDAD

Aunque la lectura del capítulo 7 pueda parecer tediosa hoy en día, la lista de nombres fue una importante fuente de “consuelo” en aquellos días. (Neh. 10: 1-39) La lista se basó en la lista original de Esdras y demostró continuidad con el pasado. (Esdras 2) En agosto pasado, Great Oaks celebró su 30 aniversario y tuve el privilegio y la bendición de conocer su extraordinaria historia. Como militares, nos movíamos bastante y no habíamos sido parte de ninguna congregación por mucho tiempo. Entonces, mientras deambulaba por los pasillos, veía las diversas exposiciones colectivas, los monumentos conmemorativos y la cronología de los hitos; Sorprendentemente, después de ver todo esto, me invadió un gozoso sentimiento de pertenencia a algo incluso más grande que Great Oaks. Nehemías escribió sobre personas “vivas” designadas por su nombre. La lista no sólo daba números sino también “identidad”. Cuando las cosas parecen desesperadas y perdidas, estos registros bíblicos y nuestras propias celebraciones conmemorativas prueban que las bendiciones de Dios se extienden a lo largo de los siglos.
Padre nuestro y Dios nuestro, como Anciano de los Días, Tú no cambias. Gracias, por tu Palabra inspirada que es un registro de quienes depositaron su fe en Ti y Tus promesas. Sirven como recordatorios de que nosotros también podemos, por fe, perseverar y vencer. En el nombre de Jesús, Amén.
